Abstract
Effect of melatonin on the tibial bone of ovariectomized rats was analyzed in order to determine its antiosteoporotic and antioxidative activities. Female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 3 groups; SC as control group with sham operation, OC as ovariectomized group, and group GM as ovariectomized group treated with melatonin. Melatonin was administrated at the dose of 5 mg/BW intraperitoneally 3 times/week for 5 weeks. The results were as follows: body weight gain significantly lowered by melatonin treatment in ovariectomized rats. The bone morphometric analysis showed the significant increases in the trabeculae area of tibia cancellous bone by melatonin treatment in ovariectomized rats. The activities of radical related enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, glutathione S-transferase and catalase were not significantly affected by melatonin treatment. But glutathione peroxidase activity had increased tendency in the tibia of melatonin treated rats compared to ovariectomized ones. From these results, it can be suggested that melatonin has antiobesity and antiosteoporotic effect in ovariectomized rats.
